GEORGE WENDT :
Great Comedian & Actor
At the age of 76, George Wendt, who portrayed the adored character Norm Peterson on the hit comedy series Cheers, passed away. According to his family, the beloved comedian and actor passed away quietly in his sleep at home on Tuesday morning. "George was a devoted family man, a close friend, and a reliable companion to everyone fortunate enough to know him," a spokesman told the BBC. He will be sorely missed. From 1982 until 1993, Wendt played Norm in all 275 episodes of Cheers. He was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series six times in a row for his work.
One of the few people who appear in every episode of the show, his character Norm was a favored regular at the pub. Every time Norm entered the bar and welcomed the other customers, the whole audience would yell his name with excitement, turning his appearance into a running joke. At the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards in 2024, Wendt reconnected with some of the show's cast members, including
Ted Danson, Rhea Perlman, Kelsey Grammer, and John Ratzenberger.
Wendt starred in a number of films, including Dreamscape, Forever Young, and Gung Ho, in addition to the NBC sitcom. Additionally, he starred in Michael Jackson's 1991 Black or White music video as the father of a youngster portrayed by Macaulay Culkin. He had three children with fellow actor Bernadette Birkett, whom he had married in 1978. Jason Sudeikis, an actor and comedian best known for portraying the main character in the sports comedy Ted Lasso, was also his uncle.
People magazine quoted Ted Danson, who costarred with Wendt in Cheers, as saying he was "devastated to hear that Georgie is no longer with us." "I am sending all my love to Bernadette and the children," he declared. "I will need a considerable amount of time to adjust to this. Georgie, you have my affection. Cheers! The tavern that served as the inspiration for the popular TV series, Boston, honored Norm by posting a photo of his location on Instagram. "George wasn't just an actor - he was a symbol of comfort, laughter, and that familiar feeling of walking into a place where everybody knows your name," they stated. "To George: I appreciate the memories, the laughter, and the legacy you have left behind. You'll be at our bar forever."
Actress Melissa Joan Hart thought back to the few times she and the character had collaborated on Sabrina the Teenage Witch. His presence was always a treat to our cast and crew; he was polite, professional, and kind.
She posted on Instagram, "May you rest in peace." "Heaven just got a little funnier" .
